What’s The Big Deal?

By
July 1, 2006

Newp1 Michelle Malkin points out that the Times has published:

maps and specific street names and photographs of the private (not anymore) homes where the Vice President and Defense Secretary and their families spend their vacations?

I don’t know, is it such a big deal? I can’t imagine NY Times Publisher Arthur O. "Pinch" Sulzberger would mind someone pointing out that a search for his name can give you:

Arthur O. Sulzberger – 14 SPRINGTOWN RD – NEW PALTZ, NY  12561

and

Arthur O. Sulzberger – 41 CRAGSWOOD RD NEW PALTZ, NY  12561

And while the satelite maps don’t close in on the Cragswood Rd property, the Springtown Road address (above and below) certainly looks like a fine estate.

  1. The Times is Taking off the Gloves

I suppose it’s part of ‘the people’s right to know’. Surely it wouldn’t be a ‘payback’ for the trouble the Times got from the public for publishing classified documents about the war and TROOP MOVEMENTS. [yes I’m being sarcastic]
    Looks like Bob Kell…

  2. beth says:

Maybe he was just wanting to show that he had a bigger place than Cheney or Rumsfield! Who knows! It could be one of those ‘mine is bigger than yours things’ … ??? lol

  3. Kathy says:

I couldn’t agree more. What’s the big deal? If you were able to find Sulzberger’s addresses and a satellite photo on a simple Internet search, what exactly is the Times revealing that everybody doesn’t already know or could know with almost no effort? The article even says that real estate agents in St. Michaels used the fact that Cheney and Rumsfeld et al. have homes there as a selling point.
Also, after having read the article twice, I cannot find the maps that Michelle Malkin claims the Times published. The “specific street names” are available at Barnes & Noble or the library, and they’re not addresses; they’re street names. I’m sorry, I don’t get the outrage over this.

  4. rwilymz says:

“I’m sorry, I don’t get the outrage over this.”
I’m sure you don’t get a lot of things, Kath. That’s sorta the way it works when you advertise yourself as a beacon of negative light.
I have a feeling you’ve been watching entirely too much television, and you get your impression of the capacities and capabilities of the run of the mill pan-islamist terrorist from shows like ’24’. These are low-tech, largely underfunded, largely un- or at least under-educated dweebs. Few have access to the internet, even the ones with computers or the savvy to work them.
They are hardly likely to be able to google on “Dick Cheney vacation home” and pull up the tax plat for New Paltz NY. These people work in low-tech ways, and that means getting a lot of their “intelligence” from traditional sources — such as newspapers.
And thanks to our navel-gazing media, if any terrorist now wants to plant a home-made explosive in the flower pots in front of Rumsfeld’s summer home, they now can.
Seriously, dudette, you need to grow a brain. And then follow the instruction manual for its lifetime use.

  5. kate says:

for christ sake kathy, it’s like handing every crazy person in the world their house key. truth is, it’s not a big deal to you, because you don’t like them. i’m sure you would be outraged if it were your house.

  6. SinCerely says:

OH shit! Some links should not be visited. lmao

  7. Leslie says:

Rumsfeld’s and Cheney’s homes are well known and have been written about extensively. For example: Newsmax, Forbes, International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Salon, General Aviation News and many others. Just do a google search of Rumsfeld’s house, which is called Mount Misery, and you’ll get lots of hits. The same goes for Cheney’s $2.9 million weekend home, which is called Ballintober. Or you could drop by St. Michael’s Carpenter Street Saloon, where you can not only learn where Rumsfeld and Cheney live, but you might even see them in the saloon. Both homes are in the public domain and they’re heavily protected by the Secret Service.
But the NYT publisher’s home isn’t protected by the Secret Service. Your hate-mongering may incite people to commit violence against innocent people. You ought to be ashamed.

  8. Leslie says:

P.S. I suppose you’re going to go after anyone who writes about or photographs the location of the White House next. It’s on Pennsylvania Avenue. Whoops!

  9. Dan says:

But the NYT publisher’s home isn’t protected by the Secret Service. Your hate-mongering may incite people to commit violence against innocent people. You ought to be ashamed.
Don’t be silly. I posted “public” information because I thought the people have a right to know. Suddenly, you don’t?? tsk tsk Guess the first amendment only applies to the causes you want it to.

  10. rwilymz says:

“Rumsfeld’s and Cheney’s homes are well known and have been written about extensively”
WHEN were they written about extensively?
We do all kinds of things when not involved in warfare that we do not do when we are. Advertise all Presidential visits to foreign countries, for one example.
Hey! Every Presidential visit to a foreign country was written about extensively — key word being “was” — and yetBush’s last trip to A’stan somehow missed pre-flight ink.
Should the NYT have detailed that info too, had they gotten it?
Exactly how brain-damaged are you willing to act in public, leslie?

  12. Leslie says:

    rwilymz,
As I mentioned above, do a google search. You know how to do that right? http://www.google.com.
Cheney’s and Rumsfeld’s homes are public knowledge. [In fact, Rumsfeld's house, called Mount Misery, was once the place where Frederick Douglass was beaten by his slave owner.] Both houses have been written about quite a bit. As has the fact that Bush lives in the White House, has a ranch in Crawford and vacations at Camp David. Your own Newsmax wrote about Rumsfeld’s and Cheney’s houses in 2005, here are the links for the google impaired:

If you’re going to go after the NYT for printing information that’s public knowledge, don’t you think you ought to go after Newsmax, Forbes, the International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Salon, General Aviation News and anyone else who writes about or photographs famous houses.

  13. Polimom, Too says:

The lefties’ll getcha if you don’t watch out

  14. rwilymz says:

“As I mentioned above, do a google search. You know how to do that right? http://www.google.com.”
Patronizing responses won’t win you many points, dearie. If you’re wrong, you’re still wrong no matter how far you have to reach up to talk down to me.
“Cheney’s and Rumsfeld’s homes are public knowledge.”
The fact that they have homes is not the issue. The general location of those homes is also not the issue. The more you try to rationalize the issue the more brain-damaged you’re going to appear.
“Both houses have been written about quite a bit.”
Being “written about” is ALSO not the issue.
“As has the fact that Bush lives in the White House, has a ranch in Crawford and vacations at Camp David.”
The White House is a government building, the Crawford ranch pre-existed, and if you can find the address for Camp David, you’ll be about the only one outside the government who knows it.
And finally we’re starting to get to the issue.
    “Your own Newsmax…”
Would that it were, sweetie, would that it were.
“If you’re going to go after the NYT for printing information that’s public knowledge…”
Wasn’t aware that the addresses of their vacation homes was public knowledge.
Here, let’s use your own cites:

Again, I’m going to ask you: how brain-damaged do you wish to appear in public?

  15. Michael says:

The NY Times had no pressing need to publish that information. The American public is not “served” by knowing the driving instructions and addresses to its elected officials’ private homes. These same clueless lefties like Leslie would scream bloody murder if someone got hold of their private information at published it to millions.
The extent these hate-America, leftist slimes will go to protect and defend each other in their efforts to tear America apart are limitless. Dialog with them is fruitless and not worth the time. They should be identified – like potholes in the road – and avoided.

  16. Leslie says:

Did you read the NYT article? The addresses weren’t given. The NYT didn’t give out any more information than one could obtain doing a google search. Again, Cheney and Rumsfeld are protected by the Secret Service. The NYT staff doesn’t have any protection. Encouraging people to harass innocent people and perhaps do violence is a form of terrorism. I believe there’s a law against that.

  17. rwilymz says:

“These same clueless [people] would scream bloody murder if someone got hold of their private information at published it to millions.”
A few months ago the VA found itself in hot water about 26.5 million veterans’ name/SSN combinations being stolen in a home invasion. …including mine, btw.
The fact that veterans have names is not the issue.
The fact that veterans have SSNs is not the issue.
The issue is: what you can do with THAT information in THAT form and combination.
26.5 million names … no problem.
26.5 million SSNs … no problem, but there’d be some ‘splainin for Lucy to do.
It is THAT combination — name matched to SSN — which is the problem.
It is not that these people have homes; it’s not even that these people have homes which cost $X-million, and are close to whichever hunting club and hoozit’s country club, and are routinely described in terms of envy or spite in the popular press. It is the physical address of their homes being made available in a publication which makes it now subject to any form of attack [or nuisance] available only after knowing the physical address.
Letter bombs and drive-bys are just the first two which pop into my mind. “OH, they’d fail; they’re protected by secret service, FBI and the odd military detatchment”? So what? The fact that it’s now a much more tangible risk — and for no discernable purpose except to put individuals in our government at greater risk — is what’s at issue here.
Again, I have to ask: how brain-damaged do some people wish to appear in public?

  18. rwilymz says:

“Did you read the NYT article? The addresses weren’t given.”
    http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/06/30/travel/escapes/30michaels.html
    Driving directions and photos were.
“Encouraging people to harass [government officials] and perhaps do violence is a form of terrorism. I believe there’s a law against that.”
So right you are! I assume you’re up for the protest circling the NYT offices and demanding prosecution?

  19. jong says:

Geez – there’s NO ADDRESS LISTED in the Times article. It’s got basically the same info that has been published by a number of other outlets, some conservative, some liberal. And much less than some.
In case you didn’t notice, the Times article is in the TRAVEL section. They get paid to write fluff articles about upscale communities where the rich and famous live. And that’s all this is. There’s no info that hasn’t been widely available to anyone with the minimal skills needed to do a Google search. And considerably more can be found. This for example: http://cryptome.quintessenz.at/mirror/cheney-eyeball.htm
What a bogus issue. Distort what’s in the article to get people excited – there’s still NO ADDRESS and no new info. Work on your reading skills before accusing others of being brain-damaged.

  20. rwilymz says:

“It’s got basically the same info that has been published by a number of other outlets”
…and a database that says “CPO John Jones” has “basically the same info that another database saying “CPO John Jones, ssn:123-45-6789″, yet one is going to make commiting credit fraud on Mr Jones trivially easier.
“In case you didn’t notice, the Times article is in the TRAVEL section.”
Oh, doggone it!! That makes all the difference. Pan-islamists are well-known for avoiding any section of the paper beyond Sports.
“…fluff articles about upscale communities where the rich and famous live. And that’s all this is.”
The Washington Post article was fluff. It didn’t contain photos of the entrance to Rumsfeld’s house, so that someone who was driving around in the off-season looking for it could note that they finally had the right place, … instead of some corporate banker’s bungalow.
“What a bogus issue. Distort what’s in the article to get people excited”
Deny what’s in the article, you mean.
    “there’s … no new info.”
…unless you need to know what the place looks like so you can tell if you have the right spot.
    Except for that, you mean.
Except for being wrong, you’re absolutely right.
“Work on your reading skills before accusing others of being brain-damaged.”
    …said the illiterate.
    Thanks for playing.

  21. jong says:

Again, there’s no information in the article that hasn’t been publicly available for some time. The article doesn’t have either home’s address – you posted earlier that it did but you were, uh, distorting the article. If you really want it, you can find the address via Google along with a number of pictures of Cheney’s propery, a map to it, satellite pictures, etc. I doubt anyone is going to randomly drive around the country when they can simply spend a few minutes with Google and get the exact info. Or perhaps you’re not familiar with how Google works?
It’s also public info where the Bush residence in Texas is, but for some reason that doesn’t seem to both you.
    Earlier you wrote that:
“And thanks to our navel-gazing media, if any terrorist now wants to plant a home-made explosive in the flower pots in front of Rumsfeld’s summer home, they now can.
Seriously, dudette, you need to grow a brain. And then follow the instruction manual for its lifetime use.”
You apparently aren’t aware that both Rumsfeld and Cheney have fairly large Secret Service details paid to protect them. They do and nobody’s going to get close to those flower pots.

  22. rwilymz says:

“Again, there’s no information in the article that hasn’t been publicly available for some time”
You can repeat this mantra from now until doomsday and it won’t change the fact that YOU. ARE. WRONG.
Do you know what repeatedly asserting the demonstrably incorrect makes you?
“I doubt anyone is going to randomly drive around the country when they can simply spend a few minutes with Google and get the exact info”
If the enemy were you or I, you’d be correct.
However, the enemy is largely computer illiterate and otherwise very low-tech. They rely on such low-tech info.
“It’s also public info where the Bush residence in Texas is, but for some reason that doesn’t seem to both you.”
That was previously available. Nothing can be done about that. When nothing can be done about it, there’s no point in worrying over what should be instead.
“You apparently aren’t aware that both Rumsfeld and Cheney have fairly large Secret Service details paid to protect them.”
I am? Oh thank you thank you thank you for telling me what I already knew. What would I do without you?
Pay attention, brainless: regardless of whether or not anyone at any time is “protected”, making information available to the general public that only serves to make threats more tangible makes that security more difficult.
I also said THAT, but you were too busy being the illiterate cherry picker.
Thank you for embarrassing yourself yet again.

  23. jong says:

OK – Prove me wrong. Specifically what is in the article that wasn’t already publicly available?
And Al Qaeda is decidedly tech savvy.
    From Wikipedia:
In the wake of its evacuation from Afghanistan, al-Qaeda and its successors have migrated online to escape detection in an atmosphere of increased international vigilance. As a result, the organization’s use of the Internet has grown more sophisticated, encompassing financing, recruitment, networking, mobilization, publicity, as well as information dissemination, gathering, and sharing. More than other paramilitary organizations, al-Qaeda has embraced the Web for these purposes.

I also cannot find a physical desription of how to get to their homes in any other “detailed” write-up.

If you can, please quote it.

  30. rwilymz says:

“Prove me wrong. Specifically what is in the article that wasn’t already publicly available?”
I also cannot find the street name identified in any of the other “basically the same” articles.

  31. rwilymz says:

Again, you brainless, simpering room-temperature morons, it boils down to this:
The issue is not that the NYT travel section said “The Cheney’s have a summer home”; it’s not that they said “their summer home is on Chesapeake Bay, in the quiet hamlet of …”
It’s not even that they showed a picture of the front of some historic old home in some quiet hamlet on the shores of Chesapeake Bay.
It’s that they described the way to get this home, what the front of the place looks like, and identified the picture as the front entrance to Rumsfeld’s home.
A name of a veteran means nothing by itself.
A SSN — by itself — is just 9 random digits.
But when you put the two together, and identify those nine digits as a SSN, then you have made someone subject to credit fraud — and violated the law.
Are you people **seriously** so clueless as to not comprehend this?

I don’t know how many times I have to plug Google Earth before everyone listens to me, but I’ve added tags in the Google Earth Community (under “Current Events”) for both those addresses along with an explanation:
The NY Times saw fit to publish information in the form of pictures and descriptions of the town and streets where Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld live:
    http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/06/30/travel/escapes/30michaels.html?pagewanted=1
They were even kind enough to post a picture of the driveway leading to Secretary Rumsfeld’s house, the description of which helpfully pointed out one of the security cameras. I’m sure no one would ever think of misusing that sort of information to hurt two of our highest elected and appointed officials…
Anyway, in an effort to level the playing field, Dan Riehl (of the blog Riehl World View) has managed to locate two homes owned by NY Times Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger in the small, affluent town of New Paltz, NY.
    http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2006/07/whats_the_big_d.html
I don’t know which one is his primary estate, but this placemark shows the one located at 14 SPRINGTOWN RD – NEW PALTZ, NY 12561. The other estate is located at 41 CRAGSWOOD RD NEW PALTZ, NY 12561, but the satellite pictures aren’t of a good enough quality to make out the residence. I have tagged that location just to show the general area and have posted it here:
    http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/490165/an/0/page/0#490165
I’m located on the West coast, but if you’re in the area feel free to drive by Mr. Sulzberger’s properties and post any information or pictures regarding his security arrangements to the Google Earth community under this thread (or the one above – as appropriate):
    http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/490152/an/0/page/0#490152
Rocco DiPippo of the blog The Autonomist posted Google Maps directions (I believe from NY City):

    15. The first house of the Sulzbergers is a half mile down the road. To get to the second house, continue down Springtown Road for 2.5 miles, and turn left on Cragswood Road. The house is about a “pinch” more than half a mile down.

  34. rwilymz says:

    “Duh”
That about sums you up, yes.
“You might want to take the time to read the posts before you reply.”
And you might want to understand the issue before you trivialize it.
Irrespective of what anybody else has done, or when they did it, publicizing the locations of the administration’s key people makes the job of protecting those people more difficult. And since the only purpose for publicizing the information was to add filler to “fluff”, then you’ve got either
    1] a sub-level moron as editor; or
2] a deliberate attempt to embarrass the administration done through the auspices of a sub-level moron.
It doesn’t get simpler than that.
…although you are trying to out-simple everything.

The USSC continually lets stand lower court rulings asserting that the prez, as CinC, has the constitutional authority to order US military into wars without the approval of Congress. If Congress disapproves, they can always un-fund the military, as is their own constitutional authority.

    Here you go guys:
From someone who actually went to the trouble to asking the Secret Service about this:
“But I just got through talking with Hollen Wheeler, director of public affairs for Rumsfeld’s office. She confirmed what Glenn Greenwald has reported — that the photographer, Linda Spillers, had been granted permission to photograph Rumsfeld’s house by Rumsfeld himself.”
“She got approval to take a picture,” Wheeler told me. “She called, we said fine, go take the picture. And that’s it.”
Game, set, match. And apologize to that photographer and editor you want to “hunt down”.

“And apologize to that photographer and editor you want to “hunt down”.”
1] Nobody called for anybody to be “hunted down”. You’re down love-15
2] Granting permission to make security more difficult does not make security LESS difficult. love-30
3] The NYT has a habit of doing this very type of thing. love-40
4] I don’t know who “me” is that Wheeler told; I can invent a conversation just as easily as you.

Keep throwing those stones kids. It’s going to be a riot when the pendulum of politics makes it’s inevitable 180 degree turn and smacks you in your sadly vacant heads.
Dems didn’t start this fight, but if you childish poo-poos keep up your little devicive games I can tell you it’s not going to be pretty for you in the very near future. Here’s a couple tips for you: Learn some history, try to remember that just because you read it or heard it from one of your Bush Lap Dog Robo-propagandist Faux News “reporters” doesn’t mean it’s true, try to at least ACT like you have an ounce of integrity, and most of all GROW UP. Might save your backside a lot of what’s coming to your types if this “us and them” nonsense continues.

  52. Andy says:

What is the purpose of publishing this other than to see harm done to these people? Oh thats right – because, you are a disgrace – or maybe because
“maps and specific street names and photographs of the private (not anymore) homes where the Vice President and Defense Secretary and their families spend their vacations?”
Both are public figures (servants) with very well trained highly paid security details – which they DON’T pay for – WE PAY for that. You act as if they are not public figures (servants). You also assume they are reachable. If you some how bugged their person and published live their every waking and non waking position, they’d still be untouchable – the individuals you cite above however ARE touchable by any wingnut who thinks you actually have a valid point, which shamefully, is too many people.
Shame on you. Why don’t you spend more time investigating who inside the admin is leaking (thats more worth knowing to your readers) than who published? Oh I know; that would require slightly hard, possibly moderately hard, work.
