DailyKos: The Drafted And Discarded

By

From DailyKos on January 4, 2006:

Draft James Webb Effort Heating Up!

I just received the following e-mail from "Draft James Webb." The bottom line is that it looks like the Draft James Webb effort is really starting to heat up in the cold early days of 2006.

There are several posts from that period during which the DailyKos website was instrumental in building up the ultimately successful Senatorial campaign of James Webb. But for now, at least, you won’t find any mention of Webb these days at the DailyKos, especially with attention being focused on some of Webb’s previous writing that highlighted the cost of failure in Vietnam.

Here at home, a quiet but intense debate has raged over our involvement, with the forum largely controlled by the media and academia, two of the most staunchly antiwar communities during the conflict (a third being Hollywood). All of these groups have a large stake in having the war remembered as both unnecessary and unwinnable.

Given this via The Moderate Voice, perhaps Kos’ instituting the draft to gain the majority in Congress for the Democrats wasn’t such a good idea, after all. It seems to have resulted in yet another instance of the Left feeling compelled to abandon the troops.

There is something strange going on in the progressive blogosphere these days: instead of uniting against Republicans, progressive bloggers like Matt Stoller have decided to declare war on every Democrat who they consider not to be progressive (read anti-war) enough. Seemingly frustrated that there are actually Democratic Congressmen that do not necessarily always vote along party lines – but make up their own minds – they have decided to ask their readers to make profiles of so-called “Bush Dogs” (Blue Dogs and New Democrats) as to be able to target them in the coming years, and to replace them with progressive, left-wing Republicans.

JAMES WEBB ON WHAT HAPPENS when you pull out too soon. UPDATE: James Webb’s website at JamesWebb.com has some quotes about Vietnam that may embarrass some people today: “Vietnam should teach us an important lesson. Hanoi [is creating] a collectivist…

Oh, Mr. chridtamfordmum, I hope you are reading this post. James Webb, the pride of the Senate, the NRA, and Handgunner Magazine, the guy who has left his friend, aide, and bodyguard to twist slowly in the wind for loyally mishandling the good Senator’s piece, has a chance at the Democratics candidacy. Hope he makes it. I won’t have to worry about turning in my Para.

  3. Fred Beloit says:

    Wait, there’s more.
I know you must be very busy now, Mr. christamfordmum, what with your new project taking so much of your time. I refer of course to your putting together your new make-your-own- calendar for 2008, “Hirsute Hunks of the Taliban”. But I hope you will find time for helping out with the Webb campaign.

  4. Phoenix says:

Wow. A politician who thinks for himself. Who’d a thunk it.
“Hirsute Hunks of the Taliban”. 🙂

  5. rabit says:

It seems to have resulted in yet another instance of the Left feeling compelled to abandon the troops.
No, there’s the difference. You just don’t get it. It’s not “abandoning the troops” if the people you vote for don’t follow through with their promises. Accountability is an alien concept to conservatives, apparently stuck in this superficial, football game mentality where their side winning is more important than what they actually do once they’re elected.
Apparently the idea that you CAN be critical of people within your party is a mind-blowing concept for a lot of conservatives. Grow a spine!

  6. Fred Beloit says:

“Accountability is an alien concept to conservatives, apparently stuck in this superficial, football game mentality where their side winning is more important than what they actually do once they’re elected.” A penetrating observation by rabid.
Jamie Gorelick, remember her? She was the Dem lawyer who overbuilt the walls stopping vital information from being shared by the FBI and CIA, information that if put together might have prevented the 9/11 attack. How have you and your party, rabid, held her accountable? When does the Congressional hearing on this matter take place, you know, the one where Congresspersons get to preen and pose , verbally beat up witnesses, and insult citizens for whom they work? Don’t you know that accountability is equally shunned by those on both sides of the aisle and in all the great halls of bureaucracy? Where have you been?

  7. Phoenix says:

ACCOUNTABILITY: n. An evanescent thought promptly dismissed by a politician who’s been caught doing something bad like sticking his peepee in a young woman’s mouth, stuffing important documents down his pants, freezing money, and telling fibs.

  8. chris says:

Most of VA is redneck-country. You can’t run a real progressive when you have hilljacks like your klassy internet girlfriend making up the bulk of the populace. You need slogans and flag-waving and proclamations of troop-support. Rubes like that stuff. At the end of the day, Webb is far better than Macaca (still the funniest clip on youtube).

  9. rabit says:

    Fred Bonoit farts out:
    “A penetrating observation by rabid.”
You make me sad. *sad clown face*
Then he lets a big wet one fly
“Jamie Gorelick, remember her? She was the Dem lawyer who overbuilt the walls stopping vital information from being shared by the FBI and CIA, information that if put together might have prevented the 9/11 attack. How have you and your party, rabid, held her accountable?”
Why didn’t your mommy hold you accountable for lying? Try this on for size – “All members of the 9/11 Commission agreed that Gorelick played no significant role in damaging information sharing on terrorist activities.”
Slade Gordon, a member of the September 11 Commission, refuted the Washington Times lying reporting with this statement:
“The criticisms of the September 11 commission and, in particular, my commission colleague Jamie Gorelick, are unfounded (“Blinks and winks on Able Danger,” Commentary, Tuesday, and “Able Danger’s hidden hand,” Commentary, Monday). The commission asked the Defense Department for all documents relating to the Able Danger military intelligence program. None of those that the Defense Department supplied us mentioned Mohamed Atta.”
    Go read!
Is that all you have? Any more lies that can be disproved with an easy 5 minutes Googling, Mr. Fred Beloit? Yes, I bet your mind is full of them.

  10. Fred Beloit says:

Wipe that white foam off your mouth, rabid, and read some high praise for that Commission you are so fond of:

WASHINGTON – July 21 – On Friday, July 22, 2005, one year to the day after the release of the “9/11 Commission Report,” Project Censored founder, Dr. Peter Phillips will lead a National Press Club briefing entitled “The Failure of the 9/11 Commission Report and the Mainstream Media’s Disregard.” The briefing will feature scores of detailed examples of the Commission’s flawed findings, self-censorship, misrepresentations and conflicts of interest that call the accuracy and integrity of their entire investigation into doubt.

Lead presenters are 9/11 family members and Family Steering Committee cofounders, Monica Gabrielle, Mindy Kleinberg and Lorie Van Auken. After the FSC members’ 18 months of lobbying finally forced a 9/11 investigation and the Commission’s creation, they submitted hundreds of unanswered questions that Commissioner Jamie Gorelick promised would be their investigation’s “road map”. However, by these courageous widows’ count, the Commission ignored approximately 70% of their concerns, and also suppressed important evidence and whistleblower testimony that challenged the official story on many fronts.
Next, renowned theologian, Dr. David Ray Griffin, will address “9/11 and the Mainstream Press.” Griffin’s new book, “The 9/11 Commission Report – Omissions and Distortions,” analyzes over 115 specific lies, omissions and misrepresentations contained in the final document. He not only details individual lies and the larger patterns they form, he also documents glaring conflicts of interest within the Commission, especially the executive staff who steered, shaped and effectively wrote the final report.”

  11. Rabit says:

Fred Beloit continues to make funny:
Wipe that white foam off your mouth, rabid, and read some high praise for that Commission you are so fond of
Fred thinks I’m fond of the 9/11 Commission because Google up a quote from a commission member that completely proves he’s a liar. Now he thinks the way to defend himself is to change the subject completely on the credibility of the entire 9/11 Commission.
    The Republican-created, Republican-led 9/11 Commission.
Well, duh! Fred repeats what Michael Moore touched on in Fahrenheit 9/11 three years ago.
Conservative minds are like rocky boats, no truth to keep an even keel. Rocky boats are fun to play with.

  12. Rabit says:

    Phoenix eschews:
“COUNTABILITY: n. An evanescent thought promptly dismissed by a politician who’s been caught doing something bad like sticking his peepee in a young woman’s mouth, stuffing important documents down his pants, freezing money, and telling fibs.”
Yeah, the Clinton years were innocent times. I get a little misty-eyed reminiscing about it now because, you know, the last 6 years of Republicanism has seen a lot of ugliness; male-prostitute making regular late-night visits to the White House (Jeff Gannon), politicization and shocking incompetence of appointed officials (Gonzalez, Goodling, Brown, Chertoff, Petreaus, Rumsfeld, Bremer, EVERYONE!), political corruption everywhere (Abromoff, Stevens, Cunningham, etc, etc, etc), republican politicians getting caught in public restrooms looking for gay sex (Bob Allen, Larry Craig), Abu Ghraib, sex with young male pages (Larry Craig, Mark Foley), molesting young girls (Ted Klaudt), two cases of Young Republican leaders from different states being caught for attempted rape (Michael Flory, Glenn Murphy), unconstitutional wire-tapping, vice-president shooting a man in the face, and…. The Iraq War!!!
    Bunch of screw ups!
