Juan Williams: Palin not “intellectual enough” to debate Obama

By
December 27, 2010

– Jennifer of Cubachi

Juan Williams on Fox News Sunday was asked about his opinion for strong GOP opponents to go against Barack Obama.

Williams replied Palin can't go against Barack Obama intellectually.

So who did Williams cite as a great GOP opponent against Obama?

Oh, G-d, Williams is an ass. Huckabee? First, just when has Obama actually shown himself to be intellectual, or a good debater, or nimble with facts and theory that were not pre=spoon fed to him?
As for Sarah Palin, whether she is an intellectual is still an open question. What Sarah Palin is not is a great conventional speaker. The mystery is squaring her speaking “level” with what you see her writing, even on Facebook, which is both very intelligent, and incredibly powerful.
Unless Palin’s writings are ghostwritten, she is no dolt. Obama? Whether he’s a dolt or not is still a very very open question. Ironically, Obama seems to be everything Palin is accused of being, and vice versa….

The problem you have with her style is it isn’t what you are used too. The media has created a standard for “great speakers” Palin was not taught that type of speaking. However if you get past the style part of her off the cuff remarks….you hear a wealth of information from her. It is just the order and style she uses that distracts from what she is saying. This happens with a lot of people that want to say so much they mangle their thoughts as they talk. Most of these people will be very good writers, since the act of writing requires you to order the information you want to discuss unlike speaking does. She is saying the same things just in different ways.
Think the “absent minded professor” when you listen to her speak.

  3. ParisParamus says:

Unseen, I kind of agree with you. I don’t think it’s a conceit that many very smart, even brilliant people are not great speakers. I’m a terrible speaker when it comes to groups; maybe I’ll learn how to speak to juries better, but I just seemed wired to speak to people one-on-one.
Palin is getting better–what she really needs is an appointment to position of Secretary of Interior and Energy (the Depts need to downsize and merge). But I digress…

  4. Drago says:

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.
It doesn’t really make any difference what Juan Williams thinks about who can or cannot debate anyone else.
I would imagine this is pretty much the standard liberal opinion on this matter.

  5. barfo says:

Juan Williams, last week’s fringe right hero, learning how fast they will turn on you if slip up while reciting their dogma…

  6. gary gulrud says:

    “last week’s fringe right hero”
Last week’s model diversity hire, lynched by the Left for being an embarrassing Uncle Tom.

  7. inge says:

    Williams inportance is ‘skin-clor’.
To label Obam ‘intellectaul’ is a joke; anyone can read from the teleprompter a speech not written by HIM.
Again, we see establishment trying to force a ‘rhino’ on u like they did in 2008 with McCain.

  8. gary gulrud says:

I think the trick to ‘debating’ Beelzebub is to remember he’s a shiftless con-artist.
Like the Brett Baier fiasco, exposing the fallacies behind his facts, he buckles, whereas ‘Bite me’ just repeats the lie with a smile. The latter is a tougher nut.

  9. ParisParamus says:

Viewing Obama as an “intellectual” is simply white liberal racists being astonished that there’s someone sorta black who isn’t “culturally” “black,” and isn’t inarticulate (on some superficial level, of course…).
The focus on Huckabee strikes me as absurd.

  10. J says:

I disagree. Palin talks common sense and THAT would confuse obama. I think it is evident to any intelligent, ordinary person that obama is not a wiz kid. Or, if he is, he is the type that can deal with a very small, narrow field and needs a keeper for regular life and more capable people to handle the rest. Definitely not someone you want as POTUS, or teaching our children.

  11. salvage says:

Palin not “intellectual enough” to debate anyone really, she is very stupid and says very stupid things. Even with the force of the GOP behind her in the last election at best her debating was adequate, that is she was able to repeat platform boilerplate. Without that support system she would look even stupider than she did here:

  12. Ragspierre says:

I was listening to someone talking about Reagan, and I realized something about Gov. Palin.
Reagan was not embarrassed about America. Collectivists are (or they openly hate it), and they have infested so much of our political discourse with that we see it in many GOP types as well.
On reason Palin drives so many of the Collective batspit crazy is that she is not embarrassed for America…
    not at all.

  13. Dave in Alaska says:

    salvage….same crap, different day…
…a weak mind does the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome…
..and that describes your daily anti-Palin posts, none of your posts will change our minds about Sarah, we just see you as the simpleton you are..so..just keep drinking the kool-aid salvage, that way we can pick you out in the crowd..
…you’ll be the one with the purple stain around your mouth..

  14. salvage says:

So that’s why I’m wrong? Palin isn’t a clueless airhead?
Huh, I’m not sure that’s much of an argument, it seems more like you can’t make any point to counter the obvious fact that Palin is dum squared, I’m mean when you’re too stupid for the Party of BushJr how much stupider can you be without a machine keeping you alive?

  15. Dave in Alaska says:

    salvage..glug,glug,glug…….

  16. syn says:

    Salvage
Getting your perky from Katie Couric says much more about your flaccid impotence than it does about Katie Couric’s perkiness.
Please do proceed to repeat yourself early and often, like the perky Katie Couric you are as amusing.

  17. Paul A'Barge says:

Obama … intellectual? Puh-leeze. Spare me the bunko.

  18. JLancaster says:

Obama is not smart, nor is he “brilliant.” Show us his college records Juan. I just can’t see the brilliance everyone speaks of. They say that just to pander to the black race in the country. He can’t put a paragraph together without the use of his teleprompter. Sort of like you people on TV. Uh uh uh, inhalator, ventilator, uh uh uh. Good grief.

  19. Neo says:

“Palin not “intellectual enough” to debate Obama”
This meme should be supported by all until it can be disproven by “events”

  20. Mark S. says:

i know.. let’s see Palin debate Williams and then we’ll see who is the “intellectual lightweight”… my guess is that it’s NOT the lady who spent time running a city and a state for any length of time.

  21. Four out of four dead cops say Huckabee is unfit for office.

  22. Paul says:

The thing in all this I haven’t seen anybody mention is the context in which Williams made his remark. Bill Kristol had just said that pretty much all of the GOP crop are more experienced than Obama was at the start of the last election cycle.

  23. Susie Q says:

Paul, why would we see the context behind the statement? That would only destroy the meme.

  24. barfo says:

Speaking of meme destroying…I hear John McCain’s going to run again.

  25. salvage says:

    >He can’t put a paragraph together without the use of his teleprompter.
Actually he can and has many times. Teleprompters are used by all politicians because they make many speeches and sometimes it’s vitally important to say the exact right words, mistakes can have unintended consequences both politically and practically.
It’s odd I don’t recall this teleprompter thing being something worth snarky comment when Bush or any other politician was using them. You do know Obama didn’t even the thing right?
Another thing he’s never done is write basic points down on the palm of his hand to glance at during an interview.
Are you sure Palin is smart? That sure seemed like something a real moron would do.

  26. Dave in Alaska says:

SO salvage……while BO has to be fed whole speeches via the Prompter twins, Sarah relies on key words to remind herself of whole sections of long speeches….so who is the moron?..see cost breakdown below..
    http://pajamasmedia.com/zombie/2010/02/10/crib-notes-technology-cost-analysis/
…so lets see BO do a forty minute speech with three or four words as a guide…..when he tries to..it sounds like a con man pedaling a line of BS to his marks…
..which is exactly what the American people have become to BO &Co…MARKS…to be conned out of their Rights & Freedoms..

  27. kansas says:

Trying to convince the Palin haters of anything is a waste of time. Yeah. She’s so dumb she’s made a bundle on speaking engagements, books, a TV show, and gets the media to mention her every day. And Bristol. She’s so dumb she paid 172 K in cash for a house in Arizona. Those Palins are such idiots. It’s obvious the liberals are terrified of her.

  28. Drago says:

salvage: “Teleprompters are used by all politicians because they make many speeches and sometimes it’s vitally important to say the exact right words, mistakes can have unintended consequences both politically and practically.”
Hilarious! No politician has used teleprompters anywhere near as often as obambi has. For obvious reasons. When obambi is off-script, bad things happen. Not even a “corpseman” could help him at those times! He even had to use one at an elementary school! LOL!
But go ahead salvage, regale us again with tales of obambi’s genius! The amusement is never-ending!
salvage: “It’s odd I don’t recall this teleprompter thing being something worth snarky comment when Bush or any other politician was using them.”
Hey rocket scientist, perhaps it’s because Bush didn’t use teleprompters any where near as often as obambi! LOL!
I guess you missed the “obvious” retort to your “powerful and insightful” observation! LOL!
salvage: “You do know Obama didn’t even the thing right?”
Yikes! looks like salvage could use a teleprompter too!!! LOL!

  29. Comanche Voter says:

Salvage if you’d ever had any experience with public speaking–which I seriously doubt, you’d know that good public speakers rehearse and even memorize an important speech. They then take the full text or notes to the podium. They may glance at the notes or the text–or what’s written on the palm of their hand. But it’s more important to connect with the audience than to read the damned text. A good speaker, asked to make a few remarks, can take a handful of notes and give a 15 minute speech.
If you watch Barack Obama read a speech from a teleprompter (it’s not HIS speech and he frankly doesn’t know what the hell will come up on the screen next) you’ll see that he turns his head from one side to the other on about 5 second intervals. He’s “looking at the audience” as he reads from one screen or the other. But in terms of connecting with the audience he might as well be a damned bobble headed doll. In fact he may BE a bobble headed doll.
And once you get Obama off the teleprompter, the dude is in the very deep yogurt. Umms, ahhs, blank stares, a sort of panicked WTF should I say now? Turn a Sara Palin loose and ask for 15 minutes of extemperaneous speech—do the same for Our New Messiah–and see who wins that contest! My money’s on Palin for that event.

  30. fb274 says:

At press conferences, the questions asked have to be submitted prior to the press conference. One can see the podium in the press room now has prompters built into it. At town hall meetings all the questioners have been preselected, as well. Remember seeing clips of one of Zero’s press conferences where he was reading the comments intended for his guest speaker. Oh yes, mr. intelligence, that’s the Kenyan Zero for you.

  31. barfo says:

It’s funny the wingnuts are still underestimating Obama two years after he crushed McCain and their snowbilly grifter cult leader.

  32. salvage says:

    >Sarah relies on key words to remind herself of whole sections of long speeches….so who is the moron?
Sarah obviously. Pay attention dum-dum, this isn’t rocket science.
    >.it sounds like a con man pedaling a line of BS to his marks…
And yet the majority of Americans voted for and continue to approve of him. So what does that tell you? I know, I know, they’re all stupid except for you and your fellow wingnuts!
Strange tho, the Bush Administration did just that, lied through their teeth about Iraq’s WMD and to this day idiots just like you continue to believe what is now indisputably a lie.
The proof of that being, y’know, no WMD.
Are you sure you can spot a conman?
    >And once you get Obama off the teleprompter, the dude is in the very deep yogurt. Umms, ahhs, blank stares, a sort of panicked WTF should I say now? Turn a Sara Palin loose and ask for 15 minutes of extemperaneous speech
What’s truly fascinating here is this is the exact opposite of true, there is literally hours of video that show this to be wrong and yet here you are. Furthermore Palin has and will use teleprompters like everyone else who gives speeches.
Wingnuts and reality, will they ever meet?

  33. Ragspierre says:

“And yet the majority of Americans voted for and continue to approve of him.”
Support the latter. The truth is the opposite. Even the Collective knows that. The more sane part…
You and Barfo are beginning to sound like a parody of actual trolls.
And, notice, the wheels have come off your wagon, and you’re back to frothing about Booooooosh and simply sputtering lies.
Get in to see the Doc, guys.

  34. Dave in Alaska says:

salvage…keep drinking that kool-aid…..you really have sold your brain for advertising space for BO haven’t you…

  35. Ragspierre says:

“you really have sold your brain for advertising space for BO haven’t you…”
So much about that sentence one could point out…
    but I take your point!

  36. salvage says:

    >”And yet the majority of Americans voted for and continue to approve of him.”
Oopps, you’re right, he’s down to 45% these days (thought I saw he broke 50% over the holidays, guess not) yet strangely he’s still getting some stuff done.
But America still likes him far more than Sarah Palin, youbetchya!

  37. salvage says:

See what I did there? I was wrong about something, realized and admitted it. I wonder what that looks like to a wingnut brain?

  38. Drago says:

salvage: “See what I did there? I was wrong about something, realized and admitted it. I wonder what that looks like to a wingnut brain?”
It looks like you’re about 1% complete on admission of incorrect analysis/faulty logic/ridiculous acceptance of “facts” that are anything but.
But hey, a start is a start.

  39. Drago says:

salvage: “Pay attention dum-dum, this isn’t rocket science.”
    LOL!
    How would you know?
As if you had any understanding whatsoever of anything scientific!
    LOL!

  40. Ragspierre says:

“I wonder what that looks like to a wingnut brain?”
    An aberration.
A welcome aberration, diminished by the customary hatefulness…but welcome nonetheless.
    Continue now.
Saudi offshore drilling a new thing?
    Saudi oil sands?
Supply and demand can be manipulated by a supplier of a fungible commodity in a competitive market?
    All “asbestos” is deadly?
I could go on…but that will be enough to get us going…

  41. Drago says:

Rags, you simply have to include salvages’ virtuoso “statistics” performance in accepting as a “fact” that abstinence-only based education doesn’t work as “proven” by the “study” promulgated by a well-known lefty who only looked at 4 small programs (2 “rural”, 2 “urban”) and drew comprehensive conclusions from this cherry-picked “data set” for the entire nation!
And salvage accepted it at face value, with no questions whatsoever!!! LOL!
    Beyond hilarious!!

  42. Ragspierre says:

    Well, yeah…
I could include his factual assertion that abstinence education was “retarded”…which sorta lacks a rational basis…
but I was trying to be gentle.

  43. salvage says:

Wow Raggy, you just can’t read very well can you?
    >Saudi offshore drilling a new thing?
They go deeper and deeper away from the coast line so yes.
    >Saudi oil sands?
I was talking about the Canadian oil sands, words mean things!
    >Supply and demand can be manipulated by a supplier of a fungible commodity in a competitive market?
Once again I point you to OPEC, they seem to think so and have thought so for a few decades now. You should tell them they’re wrong.
    >All “asbestos” is deadly?
Once again, no, it’s the processed asbestos in building where people are that is the problem. I’m not sure how many more times you’ll want me to repeate this, this is about the fourth time, perhaps that will do the trick. Then again wingnuts have poor learning skills.

  44. Dave in Alaska says:

salvage…”then again wingnuts have poor learning skills” ….and your constant repetition of left wing talking points and your lack of links for backup continues to shows us how intelligent(or lacking intelligence) you are…remember that when you point a finger at others, three are pointing back at you…
    Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals
Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.

  45. Drago says:

    Dave in Alaska is correct.
There is no commenter on these boards who has demonstrated less understanding of business/science/mathematics/economics principles than salvage.
    No one. LOL!
But because he is a lefty, salvage presumes to “understand it all”.
Let’s just say that salvage is the Frank Rich of these boards!
Barfo is sarcastic, tries to make wildly inaccurate comparisons for political points, etc. The standard lefty troll stuff.
But you can tell that barfo has a functioning brain and is a least moderately amusing at times.
    Salvage, not so much.

  46. Drago says:

Dave:”…and your lack of links for backup ..”
    There’s a reason for that.
Everytime salvage provides a “link for backup”, his “point” is easily demolished.
Nope, salvage just continues in his hapless way hoping against hope that anyone reading his inanities are as ill-informed as he.
Of course, they are not, thus the lack of links.
    Poor poor salvage.

  47. Ragspierre says:

I was hoping you were giving up on lying, sewage.
Too bad, now I’ll have to embarrass you…again…some more…additionally…
sewage: “What people in the know do is look at action, like Saudi Arabia getting into off-shore drilling and oil sands. That means that we are starting to scrape barrel bottoms, that doesn’t mean it’s empty but it means that people are starting to think it’s getting there. People who would know, like Saudi Arabia.”
Yes, sewage…words DO mean things, and I’m quoting yours. NOW you are lying again.
“Asbestos” is not a thing. It isn’t even a chemically identical family of things. You don’t change it when you incorporate it with other thing…like to make insulation, shingles, siding, flooring, or water pipes (I’ve laid miles of it). Most forms are harmless. A few are not.
The only “changed” form of asbestos of which I know is TALC.
    Poor, poor stupid, lying sewage.

  48. Drago says:

Rags, this is simply another case of salvage not possessing the basic understanding required to apply critical thinking to his left wing talking points.
Whenever lefties repeat, ad nauseum, the same talking points over and over, it demonstrates that they are from the shallow end of the troll pool and simply don’t have the knowledge/training/experience/education to properly engage in dialogue or debate.
What’s most amusing is their insistence on trying though! And they clearly believe they are being effective! LOL!
If ignorance is truly bliss, then salvage must be ecstatic!

  49. Ragspierre says:

“If ignorance is truly bliss, then salvage must be ecstatic!”
    Well said!
Sadly, though, ignorance is dark, frightening, confusing, and soul-crushing. It often leads to hatred of that which is feared. Cause and effect hold no meaning.
Witness sewage. More a thing to be pitied than reviled. Just barely.

  50. barfo says:

Drago and Rags are probably the same person…how sad is that?

  51. Drago says:

barfo: “Drago and Rags are probably the same person…how sad is that?”
ahh, projecting again I see barfo!! LOL!
I don’t blame you. The most famous of sock-puppeteers is of course Glenn Greenwald, lefty in fabulous standing and erstwhile political ally of none other than our beloved barfo!!
    LOL!
But I’ll betcha barfo has never once, not never evah evah nuh uh uh commented on it!!
Additionally, the most well recognized practitioner of the astroturfing technique in none other than David Axelrod.
So, naturally, barfo jumps in with both feet to accuse, falsely of course (LOL!) more conservative commenters of doing precisely that which the left is infamous for.
Is there anything more predictable than a lefty troll? LOL!

  52. Drago says:

of course barfo, to recognize that the postings of rags and myself are qualitatively different, you would have to have a basis of understanding in the technical/business/academic/economic etc areas in which rags and I clearly have different perspectives.
And therein of course is why you can’t recognize the qualitative differences in our postings. You simply lack the requisite knowledge.
    Big surprise there, eh?
    LOL!

  53. Ragspierre says:

    Well…how sad is delusion, barfo?
I assure you, there is ample evidence of who I am, and it ain’t Drago or anybody else.
But, hey, if it keeps your magenta caterpillars at bay…

Nah. Lets let it be a surprise!
