Change: Democrats may move Obama’s speech from 74,000-seat stadium to 20,000-seater indoor arena

Ouch!

“Democrats are poised to avoid the danger of President Barack Obama accepting his party’s nomination before a partially-empty stadium by shifting his speech to an indoor arena and citing ‘severe weather’.

The Obama campaign have been working desperately to ensure that the 74,000-seater Bank of America stadium in Charlotte would be filled.”

  1. Kaitian says:

In other words, they’re hoping to fill up a 20,000 seat indoor arena.

  2. Ragspierre says:

No, no. This is all about Pres. Empty Chair wanting to play to more “intimate” venues!

    (See Tap, Spinal)

  3. Mike 98 says:

Losing popularity? Heavens no, Obama’s appeal is just “becoming more selective”.

  4. Bob in Houston says:

Intimate settings? next they’ll be bringing out teeny tiny little Greek (Roman??) columns!

  5. Cosmo says:

Just like the DNC was praying for the hurricane to hit Tampa head-on, I will be praying for sunny, blue skies in Charlotte on the night they move this snooze-fest indoors, “citing severe weather.” Nothing would be finer than to blame global warming for the need to move it indoors. Meh.

  6. [...] we’ll be full” when asked about the possibility of empty seats for Thursday, it appears mother nature may provide a fail safe in case the free tickets and busing proves to be insufficient. (h/t [...]

  7. Conrad Baylor says:

Go for the big arena, and never mind the rain. What could be more fitting than an empty podium speaking to 74,000 empty chairs.

It’s the perfect metaphor. Nobody’s talking, nobody’s listening. We’re all over at Ann and Mitt’s having pancakes.

  8. Comanche Voter says:

    Tough noogies.

  9. EBL says:

http://evilbloggerlady.blogspot.com/2012/09/democrats-embarrassed-that-president.html Oh no, now it is fear of the empty chair! #tcot #DNC2012 #EmptyChairDay #eastwooding

  10. Steve S. says:

If Obama connects so well with folks, why is he going to stay dry while 2/3 of his admiring crowds are compelled to stand outside in the (potential) rain? I assume that they are going to erect video screens outside for all the folks who cannot jam into the indoor arena, aren’t they?

Unless that 20,000 indoor arena is jam-packed to the limit of the fire code, the DNC will have some ‘splainin’ to do.

  11. MarkJ says:

The Donks’ excuse reminds that in the old Soviet Union poor harvests were blamed on “the weather”.

I daresay the USSR had 70 continuous years of “bad weather.” ;)

  12. Lynn says:

So President Empty Chair is now attracting empty chairs??

  13. geek49203 says:

Charlotte has a threat of severe weather (or at least rain) virtually every afternoon. That someone didn’t know that while they planned things is pretty inconceivable.

  14. The Fop says:

I guess they didn’t get permission to load convicts from local prisons onto buses to go to Black Panthers Stadium.

  15. Curt Schilling says:

Wow, what a surprise! The sole source of authority for this contains not one factual source of information supporting – anything – other than maybe having to move inside if the weather sucks. That they planned to have this thing outside in NC in September was, of course, not well thought out.

  16. thucydides says:

So they couldn’t give away enough free tickets at the bars? Tough crowd.

  17. edj says:

It’s understandable that the Democrats can’t fill a 74,000 seat stadium. What’s mystifying is why they thought they could. This stadium fiasco shows the bad judgment that has plagued this administration from the beginning. They act on their own fantasies about how the world works, and when reality wins, people suffer.

  18. Errol Woolen says:

Simple solution to a vexing problem… they could only find 20000 people willing to show an ID to attend !

  19. aaron says:

    #athousandemptychairs

Come on Obama, Clint’s 82. Step up!

  20. RebeccaH says:

We can read two things from this move: either the DNC couldn’t afford all the buses needed to bring people to the arena, or they couldn’t get enough people to fill the buses.

    #ConventionFail either way.

  21. Uh, Clem says:

Maybe they should use food stamps for admission tickets?

  22. Stan says:

    The Clint Eastwood effect?

  23. The Dems should just bow to the inevitable and move the speech back to that Tilted Kilt restaurant the WI Dems fled to…

  24. Thucydides says:

Of course the Legacy media will only have tight shots of the arena; only bloggers, FOX and C-Span might be able to show the actual size of the crowd.

Must not interfere with the “narrative” in any way!

  25. Mike Davis says:

Abortion Fest 2012 ….and that explains the dwindling numbers!

    Puppet Show

  30. john mitchell says:

Let me see… 74,000 seat to 20,000 seats and they still have to bus people in. Romney did not have to bus any in. Obama’s ego has to be bigger than all of Kenya.
