Wow. Tragic. But what was the kid doing prowling around with dark clothing and a ski mask? Whew! What do you say?

During what appeared to be an attempted late-night burglary, a man fatally shot a masked teenager in apparent self-defense outside his sister’s house and then discovered it was his son, state police said.

Police said 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano was shot at about 1 a.m. on Thursday in New Fairfield, a town just north of Danbury.

The shooter’s sister was alone in her house when she believed someone was breaking in. She called her brother, who lives next door, and he grabbed a gun and went outside to investigate, police said.

This is a tough one. I had seen the headlines, but had not read before that the teen was shot outdoors at his AUNTS home. I had assumed he was prowling around as a gag in his own home and the father shot thinking it was a real burglar.

The thing is that if the teen was in burglar gear, outside of a home (any home) at 1:00 am, he was up to no good. I have a couple of male relatives who had no problem robbing from their close family members. In fact (years ago) one of them was nearly shot by my boyfriend as he tried to steal a bike from our back patio in the early am. I would not have been angry or blamed my boyfriend if that had turned tragic. WE didn’t know he was “just” trying to steal the bike.

I am surprised the man shot AT someone who had not actually broken in. That being said, a ski mask is a ski mask. NO ONE wearing a ski mask in the dark of night is recognizable and they are certainly scary.

The father will likely never forgive himself, but how would he have felt if his son had successfully entered the Aunts home and did more than just steal a few items from her?

The teen probably could have burgled her home when she was away at work if his only intent was to steal. Planning to enter the home while she was likely in bed is a much different thing.

This makes my mind reel with so many questions and worries. Did the father deliberately shoot to kill (experienced people know what I mean)? Was there any verbal exchange between father and son?

I cannot imagine how this father felt the moment he realized who was behind the mask, most likely without anyone else around and just a second after he fired. Wow.

I doubt it will take any time for control advocates to take full advantage of this either.

    Sad in every single aspect.
