Military absentee ballots go AWOL in 2012: 92% drop

I’ve noticed a rash of stories along these lines.

A 92 percent drop in absentee-ballot requests by military personnel in Virginia is raising concerns that the Pentagon is failing to carry out a federal voting law.

With only 1,746 military voters in Virginia requesting absentee ballots so far this year — out of 126,251 service members in the state —the Military Voter Protection Project says the system has broken down.

  1. Tim Prescott says:

From my foxhole here on Ft. Bragg, there has been NO emphasis on voting this cycle. In the past we would be absolutely inundated with command level messages, voter assistance information, absentee process guidelines, etc. Not one message this cycle. Not ONE! It is appalling and quite telling I’m afraid.

  2. SASP says:

It’s probably not in the current Commander and Chief’s best interest to see high military voter turn out. This failure to support military personnel in registering to vote may be a top-fed effort.

  3. Nelli says:

Sounds like possible serious dereliction of duty going on here. We have a duty to make sure our armed forces have a vote, and if our employees are failing to provide the necessary support, we need to fire them. All the way to the top.
