Walter Samaszko had $200 in the bank and $7 million in gold at home when he died
Walter Samaszko Jr. was dead for over a month when his body was discovered after neighbors called authorities because of a smell. How would you like to be his long lost only remaining heir?
When Walter Samaszko Jr. died at his home in Carson City, Nev., he had $200 in a bank account. But as officials later discovered, Samaszko had about $7 million stored neatly around his home, the Nevada Appeal reported. In late June, neighbors called authorities because of a smell emanating from Samaszko’s home. He was a recluse who had told them he hated the government and feared getting shots, but still, it had been a while since they had seen him, according to the Appeal.
Some additional details from the Tahoe Daily Tribune:
Glover said he gets cases like that periodically. He called in Aftermath to handle cleanup and called lawyer Dawn Ellerbrock to handle the probate and help find any living relatives.
“I needed a favor from her because I didn’t think there was anything in it (the estate),” he said.
Shortly after the cleaning crew called him back to the house. They found gold in boxes in the garage — lots of gold.
“At that point, we took the house apart,” Glover said.
And more via the Las Vegas Sun:
Using a list of those who attended the mother’s funeral, Glover’s office tracked down Arlene Magdanz, a first cousin living in San Rafael, Calif.
Magdanz, a substitute teacher, could not be reached for comment. But a lawyer who talked to her said her first reaction was, “Oh, my God. Oh, my God.”
She had not talked to Samasko, who died of heart problems, for a year and has no plans for how to spend the unexpected inheritance.
Samasko hadn’t worked since 1968, but he had stock accounts of $140,000 and $25,000 and was living off his investments.
“Nobody had any clue he was hoarding the gold,” Glover said.
