Sources close to the investigation tell KDKA’s Marty Griffin the couple allegedly tried to starve their 6-year-old adopted son who had to be hospitalized with malnutrition.
Sources also indicate the couple’s 18-month-old adopted daughter has five different bone fractures of varying ages.

Deputy Attorney General Douglas Barbour and his wife, Kristen were arraigned today after their 6-year-old boy was found malnourished with skin lesions and the 18-month-old girl having multiple skull fractures and being possibly permanently blind.
A doctor has recommended that the children have no contact with their parents, particularly the girl who was said could be injured again or die if she remains with the Barbours, according to court documents. Allegheny County police said they began an investigation after the children saw a doctor on Sept. 14 and the boy was admitted to the hospital.
The girl was found with five bone fractures from separate incidents and is feared going permanently blind from her injuries, KDKA reports. Douglas Barbour, 33, and Kristen Barbour, 30, face charges of aggravated assault stemming from their daughter’s treatment and endangering the welfare of children related to both the girl and boy.
Douglas Barbour also faces a simple assault charge related to his son’s condition.
Chris Capozzi, a lawyer representing the Barbours, declined comment when the arrests were announced on Thursday. He did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Friday after details emerged from court documents following the couple’s arraignment.
Both children, whose names were not released, went to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh on Sept. 14 after the boy was taken to an urgent care center for hypothermia, rapid breathing and skin lesions, which a doctor later determined were caused by lengthy exposure to urine, court documents say. The boy was admitted to the hospital.
The girl was having difficulty breathing and her eyes were rolling back in her head; Dr. Rachel Berger found the toddler had multiple head fractures in various stages of healing, the documents say.
risten Barbour allegedly told doctors the toddler often banged her head accidentally, but Berger said the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse.
She is the one who recommended to police that the children have no contact with their parents who according to KDKA adopted them in March through a church organization.
The boy weighed 47 pounds when he came to the U.S. from Ethiopia in March but 37.5 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital, police said. He gained nearly seven pounds during a six-day hospital stay, Berger told police.
When Douglas Barbour was told his son’s body temperature was 93.6 degrees, he reportedly asked: ‘Would that be from being in the bathroom, cold, wet and naked for an hour?’
Officials who questioned the boy were told he was forced to eat his meals in the bathroom or sometimes stand there in the dark if he soiled his pants.
Attorney General Linda Kelly said Douglas Barbour has been suspended without pay.
‘Our thoughts are with the children, and the Office of Attorney General will cooperate fully with this investigation,’ Kelly said.
The Franklin Park couple are scheduled for an Oct. 9 preliminary hearing.
The couple are currently out on BOND.
The Barbours lawyer went to PENN STATE/GEORGETOWN LAW BSCHOOL AND Mr. Capozzi returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, where he served as an Assistant District Attorney in Allegheny County and later as a Senior Deputy Attorney General in the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. It appears the strategy is to figure out how to get one of the “good ole boys” from the same pshcho path white collar group off if they can and the hell with what happened to innocent children. They should be brought up on voluntary attempted murder charges. Willfully using physical brute force and willfully using food as a weapon by keeping it from the child and practically starving the kid to death. IF, the Barbourns kept plugging the childs airway until they passed out, depriving them of adequate air supply by repeated acts of smothering them almost to death, wouldn’t we call that attempts on their lives? Food, water and Air is a must and these idiots used food and water as their abuse weapon. ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE LIST. What in Earth does this have to do with wether or not black folks are racist too?!!! Nearly everyone is to a degree. Sadly, this case again raises the issue of whether whites should be allowed to adopt black children. I have a sick feeling that these (yes, extremely racist) sickos adopted these Ethiopian children to act out their racist fantasies of having a couple of black children as pets. Their greatest sadness in life is probably that they were not born into early 19th century America where they could treat every brown skinned person, young or old, like a sub-human. The focus of this article is about these sickos. It does matter what color they are!

I will however state that I have seen a few times where this has not been the case!
I suggest you wait to see how it turns out in court. Unfortunately we live in a society that find people guilty and their innocence needs proven.

Doug and Kristen are not mosters. They didn’t abuse their children. Have you not read where these two kids came from, Ethiopia. A poor poor country, with no God in lives. These kids have been through a lot of things while in Ethiopia before this loving, God fearing couple adopted them. This kids were adopted knowing that they had issues that these beautiful people had to deal with once these kids were brought home to America. Find out the facts before making judgement. Who gave you the right?

Ethiopia has had its fair share of natural calamities and it is a poor african country but everybody gets food when the weather favours and not everybody in Ethiopia is poor. The boy weighed more when he was being adopted than when he was rescued and you want to tell me his adopted parents took good care of him?. Sickening case of child abuse!
I was Kristen’s college roommate for two years. We (my husband and I) became acquainted with Doug also and sang in their wedding. I have not been in contact with them regarding the allegations but know they would not hurt their children. There are probably many people who dropped the ball for the situation to get so bad, possibly even Doug and Kristen in some way. But they did not hurt their kids. This blogger paints a picture of what is an entirely more likely scenario.

Oh yeah, ANDREA PITTMAN, what good logic that is!! This innocent CHILD gained 7 lbs. in SIX days at the hospital. There were lesions from prolonged exposure to urine. FIVE skull fractures! Do not come on here and say they didn’t hurt their kids. I guess it’s easier to deny what is obvious because it is so horrible and unfathomable, but this world isn’t all puppies and rainbows. Real evil exists and these people did something unforgivable to 2 children. CHILDREN!! This sickens me.

I cannot believe that people are referring to race on this. This is so sad it makes me sick and for her friend to say this isn`t abuse when she hasn`t seen them is wrong. Children don`t willing starve themselves or lay in their own pee. Why would you adopt and then abuse
them. They would of been better off left in their own country.Doesn`t anyone check on the welfare of adopted children, they should for a least a year. You don`t know anyone really, until you`ve lived with them at least 6 months. Sad!!!!!
I know some white people who adopted several children and did not abuse them.
