Bizarre and tragic events at the University of S. Alabama when a freshman, Gilbert Thomas Collar was shot and killed – pictured above with his mother, Doris Elisabeth Collar.

In a tragic and bizarre incident a University of Alabama student who was naked has been fatally shot after charging a campus police officer early on Saturday morning. University officials said that the confrontation occurred after the officer went outside the police station to investigate a banging noise that was coming from his office window.

Confronted with 18-year-old Gilbert Thomas Collar who was acting erratically and wearing no clothes, the officer shot the student once in the chest after he repeatedly charged. Via  Mail Online.

This appears to be an “Email from campus security…” though perhaps not their last update:

At 1:23 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, University of South Alabama Police responded to a loud banging noise on the west side window of the police station. When an officer exited the station to investigate, he was confronted by a muscular, nude man who was acting erratically. The man repeatedly rushed and verbally challenged the officer in a fighting stance.

The officer with weapon drawn ordered the individual to halt. The officer retreated numerous times in an attempt to calm the situation. The individual continued to press toward the officer in a threatening manner. The assailant kneeled for a moment, and then he rose again, rushing and chasing the officer, who continued to retreat away from the building. When the individual continued to rush toward the officer in a threatening manner and ignored the officer’s repeated commands to stop, the officer fired one shot with his police sidearm, which struck the chest of the assailant. The individual fell to the ground, but he got up once more and continued to challenge the officer further before collapsing and expiring.

The deceased has been identified as Gilbert Thomas Collar, an 18-year-old freshman from Wetumpka, Ala.

  1. How is this cop not being charged with murder or manslaughter?

  2. Patrick says:

He didn’t have to kill this kid. WTF is wrong with cops now a days?!?

  3. Sammy says:

I feel bad for both parties, the young man was obviously drunk or high on something to do a thing like that. That officer is going to have to live with this the rest of his life.

  4. fran says:

Why he didn’t shoot to a leg or any non-vital part?

  5. DC says:

Umm Do they not have tasers, that would have stopped this kid, so they could have gotten him the help, he apparently was seeking.

    • sewinggirl38 says:

Yes they do have tasers and the campus cop could see the student didn’t have a gun. Really at 1:23 in the morning the kid had to be looking for help.

      • BH says:

Actually, at the University of South Alabama, police officers are not required to have tasers, so he might not have had one. Also, people were going into the laundry rooms earlier warning students that there was someone high on acid running around naked and to be careful. Whatever the situation, it will be investigated inside and out.

  6. Argle Bargle says:

    Well…it did happen in Alabammy.

    • David says:

      Yeah, that’s brilliant.

    • Alabamian says:

      Argle Bargle,
Please don’t show your ignorance at the expense of Alabama. We have a great state, and our crime rate is much lower than in many states. Every state has crime, and freak events happen everywhere – even in your state. This was a good kid, a very good kid, so something odd was going on.

  7. Sarah says:

To argle bargle, just because it happened in alabama shouldn’t mean anything. Contrary to popular belief we aren’t all dumb rednecks. Gil collar was an amazing person who didnt deserve to die. We all do stupid things in college t,hat doesnt give someone the right to take their life

  8. Bertha says:

You can’t just blame the security officer without further investigation. Look at all the problems happening at schools everywhere. Let’s see what the final outcome reveals.

  9. I would have done the same says:

Lets not scrutinize the P.D. There will be a full investigation and its on camera. If a drug crazed man showed up at my house I would shoot him. I’m not a bad ass or a gangster just a 2nd amendment conservationist. There where choices made by both parties in this incident. We are not the judge and jury and I don’t here much talk about the choices of the student that led to this outcome. The police did not kill this kid, his choices and actions Saturday killed him.

  10. DD says:

Police are trained to shoot center of mass. Lets scrutinize the training of police and military nation wide and leave this officer alone. He has to live with this the rest of his life. Our officers are placed in danger every day, for to little pay to protect us.

  11. mark alexay says:

The policeman killed someone’s kid…naked, unarmed. This shit has to stop and the cop should spend the next 25 years in jail. May this kid’s and parents’ tragedy not be in vain. For the record the cop isn’t the victim.
