So much for evil oil companies: Gov Jerry Brown to Relax Rules as California Faces $5 Gasoline
The government regulators giveth and the government regulators taketh a way.
If they’re so damned smart so as to be able to dictate critical elements of your daily life, why didn’t they anticipate this coming in the first place? I feel sorry for kids who are never going to know what America was like before government took it upon itself to regulate, control, or otherwise mandate all but everything.
Gasoline closing in on a record $5 a gallon prompted Governor Jerry Brown to direct California regulators to relax smog controls so oil refineries could increase supplies of cheaper fuel.
Regular gasoline in California surged to an average $4.668 a gallon, 22 percent higher than the U.S. average, according to data today from AAA, the nation’s largest motoring organization. Some stations were charging as much as $5.89 in the Big Sur area, according to GasBuddy.com. More via California Facing $5 Gas – Bloomberg.

Although it hasn’t happened yet, or at least on a wide scale that I have seen, expect the ideologues to start spinning this as the fault of the refineries and especially the oil companies. So often, when the negative effects of regulations in any industry show up in a glaringly obvious way, the cause is projected back to the victims in a way. Big banks are almost always blamed when financial regulations cause harmful unintended (but not unexpected?) consequences. And so will progressives eventually find a way to blame refiners for not having acted faster to curb emissions, find more efficient methods, etc. After all, they ‘saw it coming’ even if the elected class did not….
