GWU Prof forces students to lobby government to ban soda

March 8, 2013

If students want to pass John Banzhaf’s law class, they’ll have to fight for increased government regulation in the food and beverages industry.

Banzhaf, a law professor at George Washington University, will require his students to lobby state and local governments to ban sugary beverages, according to a press release. The release was put out by Banzhaf himself, who summarized the objective as “Undergrads Required to Lobby for Obama Policy.”

  5. Ragspierre says:

On the matter of law, and Holder/Obama’s insane insistence on bringing foreign terrorists to US soil for regular criminal trials…

I can’t really improve on Andrew McCarthy’s post below — after all, he set the gold standard in prosecuting terrorists — but let me just add two quick points, one practical and the other legal.

First, as a practical matter, setting a standard of evidence collection in war zones or hostile countries overseas that is sufficient not only to convict a terrorist beyond a reasonable doubt in a civilian American court, but also complies with civilian rules of evidence, is not only hopelessly unrealistic, it’s dangerous.

The laws of war, of course, anticipate these difficulties and allow for the military commissions we’ve created. That’s why we should use them.

Second, and as mentioned by our ACLJ chief counsel, Jay Sekulow, in a Fox column this afternoon, if we — as the world’s foremost military power and leader of the NATO effort in Afghanistan — begin adopting law-enforcement practices in military conflicts, then we risk adjusting customary international law. What is customary international law? It’s a binding set of rules and principles developed through the actual policies and practices of nations.

Miss Ibrahim initially responded that her Twitter feed had been hacked, but now appears to have abandoned that line:

I refuse to apologize to the Zionist lobby in America regarding my previous anti-Zionist statements under pressure from American government therefore they withdrew the award.

    The Standard’s Lee Smith adds:

Now all that’s left is for the State Department to demand that Ibrahim reimburse American taxpayers for her trip to the United States.

With respect, no. What’s left is for American taxpayers to demand the State Department reimburse us for her trip to the United States by firing the boobs who okayed it.

Why is this fiasco Miss Ibrahim’s fault? Why blame a Jew-loathing, Hitler-quoting, terrorist-supporting America-hater for being offered an all-expenses-paid trip to the Great Satan and saying, hey, why not? The screw-up here is entirely on the part of the world’s most lavishly funded bureaucracy.

“Democratic legislators also have to be mindful that even members of their own partisan coalition are conflicted about this proposed legislation. While only 8% of Democrats oppose all of the gun control measures we tested, 70% of Democratic voters oppose one or some combination of the proposals (either the comprehensive package, the background checks, the liability claim, or the high-capacity magazine ban).”

“These poll numbers prove that Governor Hickenlooper and the Democrats are listening to Bloomberg and Biden instead of Coloradans,” comments state senator Greg Brophy, responding to the poll, in an email to me.

As for Republicans, Autry writes, “Not surprisingly, Republican voters in the state overwhelmingly oppose the comprehensive package (62% say it’s the wrong approach and another 26% say it goes too far), oppose holding manufacturers and sellers legally liable (94% oppose), and oppose the high-capacity magazine ban (85% agree with opponents). For the most part, the highly politically prized Independent voting bloc also opposes the key gun control measures we tested in this survey. Fully 69% oppose passing the comprehensive legislation (33% oppose outright, 36% think it goes too far), 84% oppose holding manufacturers and sellers liable, and 55% oppose the high-capacity magazine ban when presented with both sides. The one area of exception is the proposal to require gun buyers to pay the cost for a background check (51% of Republicans and 69% of Independent favor it). But, on the whole, Independents are more inclined to agree with Republicans (and gun owners), than with Democrats (and anti-NRA allies).”

The fact of the matter is, Autry writes, most Coloradans don’t think the legislation will make them “safer.” “Importantly, Colorado voters do not believe these sweeping gun control measures will make them any safer. Two out three Coloradans (65%) say these new gun control laws won’t reduce crime or make the state any safer, while just a third say they will (32%).”

News of the outlaw Obamabanana Republic…

Environmental Protection Agency officials lied when they said a top official only once used his private email for public business, Sen. David Vitter said on Friday as he released copies of several emails in which that official conducted business with the EPA’s director and with outside groups.

The revelation comes on the heels of charges from Republicans and a private sector author that former agency Director Lisa Jackson also had a private email address she used to avoid open-government transparency laws.

All government business is required to be done on official emails so that it is available for open-records requests. But James Martin, who resigned earlier this year as administrator of EPA’s Region 8, used his email to give advice to the Environmental Defense Fund and to correspond with Ms. Jackson.

Neither Mr. Martin nor EPA immediately responded to emailed requests for comment Friday afternoon.

Another federal employee has come forward to claim the Obama administration resisted efforts to ease the impact of sequester.

A U.S. park ranger, who did not wish to be identified, told that supervisors within the National Park Service overruled plans to deal with the budget cuts in a way that would have had minimal impact on the public. Instead, the source said, park staff were told to cancel special events and cut “interpretation services” — the talks, tours and other education services provided by local park rangers.

“Apparently, they want the public to feel the pain,” the ranger said.

In yesterday’s mark-up process in the Senate Budget Committee, Republican senators offered several amendments that addressed out-of-control welfare spending. The Democrats voted them all down, unanimously. One of these was particularly egregious. Jeff Sessions offered an amendment that addressed the Obama administration’s outrageous policy of advertising the easy availability of food stamps in foreign countries. This is how Sessions described the amendment:

Contrary to sound policy, the United States is spending money advertising food stamp benefits in foreign consulates. This amendment would prohibit any funds from being spent on this controversial promotion campaign.

LEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Envisioning cars that can go “coast to coast without using a drop of oil,” President Barack Obama on Friday urged Congress to authorize spending $2 billion over the next decade to expand research into electric cars and biofuels to wean automobiles off gasoline.

Obama, expanding on an initiative he addressed in his State of the Union speech last month, said the United States must shift its cars and trucks entirely off oil to avoid perpetual fluctuations in gas prices. Citing policies that already require automakers to increase gas mileage, he said he expects that by the middle of the next decade, Americans will only have to fill up their cars half as often.

“We’ve set some achievable but ambitious goals,” Obama said, speaking at Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago

“The only way to break this cycle of spiking gas prices — the only way to break that cycle for good — is to shift our cars entirely, our cars and trucks, off oil,” the president said.

“Today, we fill the store up with everything,” he said. “Tomorrow, we sell it all.”

At precisely one second after midnight, on March 1, Woonsocket would experience its monthly financial windfall — nearly $2 million from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. Federal money would be electronically transferred to the broke residents of a nearly bankrupt town, where it would flow first into grocery stores and then on to food companies, employees and banks, beginning the monthly cycle that has helped Woonsocket survive.

The “economy” (unemployment, shuttered factories, debt) is permanent, but the economic cycle is monthly, thanks to “Uncle Sam Day”:

Bardwil is fighting the gun possession charge. The gun, a loaded, .40 cal Sig Sauer, was legally registered to Bardwil’s bodyguard, who had left it in a secure box in the apartment, argues defense lawyer Michael Bachner.

Security footage from inside the posh, Turtle Bay pad shows Bardwil pointing the gun at an attempted burglar, the lawyer told The Post. Bardwil was arrested for the gun after he called 911 to report the burglary, and showed them the surveillance footage of himself pointing the gun at the retreating thief, who was later arrested himself.

“There’s no dispute that George was bing burglarized,” the lawyer said after Bardwil pleaded not guilty to felony gun possession this morning in Manhattan Supreme Court. “George had been the victim of multiple burglaries, and the DA’s office concedes that it was used in self defense.”

Respondents in The Hill Poll were asked to choose which of two approaches they would prefer on the budget, but the question’s phrasing included no cues as to which party advocated for which option.Presented in that way, 55 percent of likely voters opted for a plan that would slash $5 trillion in government spending, provide for no additional tax revenue and balance the budget within 10 years — in essence, the path recommended by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) last week.

This was almost twice as many voters as opted for a proposal that would include $1 trillion in added tax revenue as well as $100 billion in infrastructure spending, and which would reduce the deficit without eradicating it.

Only 28 percent of voters preferred this option, which reflects the proposal put forth by Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) last week.

An even stronger majority of respondents, 65 percent, said U.S. budget deficits should be reduced mostly by cutting spending rather than by raising taxes. Just 24 percent said the budget should be balanced mostly by increasing revenue.

  40. Ragspierre says:

They released them, and then lied about it.

Do Collectivists EVER get tired of Obama lying to them?

  41. Ragspierre says:

#WARONWOMEN IN WASHINGTON STATE: “When a Republican state senator left the floor to nurse her newborn son, Democrats seized the opportunity for a quick vote without her.”

The Collective cheats, lies, and steals.

  42. Ragspierre says:

“President Obama’s approval rating is in the 40s. His disapproval rating exceeds his approval rating in three different polls (Fox, McClatchy/Marist, and Quinnipiac). Congressional Democrats are beginning to grouse. And according to a Washington Post story yesterday, Mr. Obama’s approval rating at this early stage in his second term is among the lowest of any president in the post-World War II era. . . .

    • Ragspierre says:

ANOTHER American left to twist in the Islamist breeze by Pres. Sleeper.

This could help explain his tanking numbers.

    • Ragspierre says:

Following President Obama’s lunch meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins described the food served and said the president was not able to eat since his “taster” was not present.

      . . . .

“He looked longingly at it,” Collins continued. “He honestly did look longingly at it, but apparently he has to have essentially a taster, and I pointed out to him that we were all tasters for him, that if the food had been poisoned all of us would have keeled over so, but he did look longingly at it and he remarked that we have far better food than the Democrats do, and I said that was because I was hosting.”

      Pres. Not Dictator…

      what a regular guy.

  43. Ragspierre says:

Francis has been Pope for all of two days now, and already the vile progs are trying to tear him down. Michael Moore gleefully fell for a fake (but accurate!) picture of someone not Jorge Mario Bergoglio, giving communion to former Argentine dictator Jorge Rafael Videla.

The photo is still making the rounds, hours after even Moore admitted it wasn’t what he’d claimed — but why?
    —Steve Green, PJMedia

Why? Because they love lies. And they just let them bounce around the Collectivist bubble, unexamined.

    ‘Cause they are stupid.

  44. Eddie says:

Actually gold is up 87% over the same period. Not sure what that means? Maybe some insight gained as a JD/MBA graduate of a top tier diploma mill might help.

    Mission Accomplished!

    • Ragspierre says:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a new high yesterday, surpassing the previous high of 14,164 on 9 October 2007 leading to proclamations that ‘happy times are here again.’

However, importantly in gold terms, the Dow has not made any gains whatsoever, rather it has fallen by 50% (see chart).

In gold terms the DJIA has fallen from above 18 to 9.05 today and this clearly shows how the DJIA is not a good barometer for the health of an economy – especially one completely dependent on ultra loose monetary policies.

    • Ragspierre says:

I know this is too complex for your lil’ moronic mind to grasp…

but the Dow is a very stilted measure of much of anything.

Well, it DOES show that BIG, compliant companies will flourish under a fascist economic regime.

Exactly as smart people would expect.

  45. Ragspierre says:

Fascist economics don’t work to foster innovation.

    They actually kill it.

Obama is a terribly delusional man.

  46. Wow! This is a great post and this is so true
