The lone attacker was described as a young man wearing a Muslim prayer cap and a North African-style robe called a jellabah. According to a police account, he was monitored on security cameras and seen shedding his robe and fleeing in European clothes before disappearing into the crowd in a subway and suburban train entrance.

A broad manhunt was launched to track him down. President Francois Hollande, in a televised statement from Ethiopia, where he is on a state visit, urged security authorities to “look at all the possibilities” as they investigate the assault.

His comment comes after a man armed with a box cutter attacked a French soldier patrolling the business district of Paris on Saturday evening and stabbed him in the neck.

Police sources said the victim would survive the attack but gave no information on possible motivation for the assault.

The soldier was in uniform and armed and was patrolling as part of France’s Vigipirate anti-terrorist surveillance scheme in La Defense, which at weekends is packed with shoppers.

The attacker managed to flee after the assault.

While the injury is said to be serious and the soldier lost much blood, he’s being treated in a military hospital and is going to survive. By the time two soldiers patrolling with him reacted, the man alleged to have done the stabbing had fled into a large crowd.

A French soldier patrolling a business neighborhood west of Paris was stabbed in the neck on Saturday by a man who quickly fled the scene and is being sought by police, President Francois Hollande said. The soldier was patrolling in uniform with two other men as part of Frances Vigipirate anti-terrorist surveillance plan when he was approached from behind around 6 p.m. local time and stabbed in the neck with a knife or a box-cutter. Hollande, in the Ethiopian city of Addis Ababa, commented on the stabbing to say that the man was still on the run and police were exploring all leads.

French daily Le Parisien cited a police source as saying the suspected attacker was a bearded man of North African origin about 30 years old, and was wearing an Arab-style garment under his jacket.

However, Peyvel declined to confirm or deny that description and said further details about the attacker’s identity would be forthcoming.

The Army commander of a remote Alaskan base is under investigation for sexual misconduct, after allegedly allowing officers to have affairs and for permitting scantily clad women soldiers to pose for a calendar.

Soldiers at the anti-ballistic missile base claimed Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Miley had created a ‘toxic environment’ by turning a blind eye to cases of sexual misconduct.

It was claimed that women soldiers at Fort Greely were also being allowed to trade sexual favors for favorable treatment from officers.
